Our Lady of the Grapes. Dimensions: 48.5 x 66 x 8 cm.

The plaque features an image of a half length, sitting Virgin Mary holding the Baby Jesus on her right side. The Child is sitting under the cloak his Mother is wrapped in, and is lifting a fold of it that has fallen over his head with his left hand. In his right hand he is holding a grape from the bunch that his Mother is offering him. A the bottom there is a predella with the inscription B. V. dell'uva (Our Lady of the Grapes). The vine is the plant of life, and here other Christological symbols give this image a more earthly significance in line with an equally popular tradition (dating back to medieval times) that linked the sphere of "transcendence" to rural labour and its fruits.
